Cecil Arthur Leech who was born in 1900 into a seafaring
family in Yarmouth decided to become a butcher and following
training in his home town moved to Royston to avoid
the seasonal trade of the seaside location. Initially
he worked for Stanley Hoy who was a long established
butcher, farmer and grazier in Royston. However, locally
the opportunity arose to run this business and subsequently
purchase it, which he did in 1934 from the Disbrey family.

The shop in Melbourn

Following on, Michael and Barbara Leech took the business
over with Cecil eventually fully retiring from work
in around 1975, giving him more time for his interest
in bowls, becoming amongst other, president of the Eastern
Counties Bowls Association. During their watch a new
state-of-the-art abattoir was built, the product range
was increased and the main shop was doubled in size
during the eighties to incorporate the Delicatessen
department.
Meanwhile, David and Simon were learning all aspects
of the trade from the bottom up both practically and
through the institute of meat examinations, Smithfield
College London. Into the new millennium they took over
the full running of the business further expanding the
range of products with most new of them produced on
site at Melbourn. More recently the new outlet was opened
at Burwash Manor to service and expand a growing customer
base in the Cambridge area.
